Angela Rangel, History Education, Senior
My name is Angela. I was born in Chicago and raised in the South suburbs. I attended three different high schools but finally graduated from Oak Lawn Community. I spent my time playing softball, running cross country, and participating in clubs. Initially I was planning on going to community college but on an unexpected trip to ISU campus my senior year of high school, I took one look at the quad and knew at that moment that is where I needed to be. Following in my sister’s footsteps, I took the appropriate actions to get myself into Illinois State University.
I am a senior History Education major with a minor in Latino/Caribbean Studies. I have participated in various clubs and organizations at school including, University Program Board, Club Softball, and Redbird Recruiters. I have two on-campus jobs at Illinois State, one that I have been with for over three years. I work for ISU Football and ISU Admissions. I also volunteer some time at the beginning of the school year to help students get moved into the residence halls. My goal upon graduating college is to become a high school History teacher. I also plan to leave the state of Illinois and move to Florida because that is where my heart has been set since high school. I enjoy spending my days with my friends and going out. My family is always by my side and now my younger sister will be starting her second year at ISU. College has given me a life I will never forget.

Angela,
I am writing on behalf on my son,Brad, who would like to be a high school history teacher. Currently, he is attending our local community college. He would like to attend a university in the fall of 2009. We are coming this weekend (9/27) to see ISU. I am curious about your experience at ISU…will you pursue a teaching job immdiately after graduation or begin a master’s program?
We are also looking at Univ of Minnesota where they have a program to complete a masters degree in 5 years. Does ISU have something similar? I could not find it on the ISU website.
Thanks for any info.
regards, Cindy

Cindy,
First off, thank you for taking the time to look at the blogs, they are here for these exact reasons.
My experience at ISU as a history major has been a great one, and I am not just simply stating this because I work for the university. The history department at ISU is one of the largest history departments in the nation, and the reason this becomes an important factor is because as history students we are embraced with many options to study many different subjects. Almost all of my professors have been extremely helpful and VERY intelligent. My classes are no more than 30 students max and sooner than later your professors will get to know you as an individual because most likely you will encounter them in more than one class. There is a very diverse amount of classes a student can take to meet many different interests and that is what I love the most.
I will definitely pursue a teaching job immediately after college because as I have learned there are MANY schools that will pay for your education to pursue a masters degree.
I am currently unaware of a 5 year program that incorporates a masters at ISU, but I will definitely try to see if there is anything I could find out for you.
Thank you for your time, and we will be looking forward to your visit on September 27!
Angela R.
