“Oz the Musical”

Details: This holiday season stars from Disney’s High School Musical, That’s So Raven, Nickelodeon, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, V Factory and Danity Kane come together to bring you the story of Oz like you’ve never seen it before. Come follow Dorothy as she meets the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion and learns that there truly is no place like home. Featuring 12 original songs written by Playwright and Broadway actor Todrick Hall, and starring 100 local children as munchkins, this is a performance you don’t want to miss. Tickets go on sale November 19 at the Braden Box Office or Ticketmaster locations. Adults $26 and ISU students with ID and other students $21.

ANNIE - The American Musical

Late Night at the Bone

Details: Illinois State students are invited to join the Bone Student Center for a night of fun. Enjoy rock-wall climbing, a FREE showing of “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” in Braden Auditorium, a live radio broadcast, Wii games (including Beatles Rock Band), bowling, karaoke, inflatables, money machine,  and more- all FREE to Illinois State students with a valid student ID. Prizes, such as a Wii, free use of textbooks for a semester, Debit Dollars, iPods and more will be awarded. Make sure to sign up to be a part of the Bags Tournament for a chance to win more great prizes! The University Program Board willl be hosting Harry Potter-themed activities including a trivia game and “House” activities. Don’t miss out on the first “Late Night” event for the semester.

Rafe Esquith - “Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire”

Details: Rafe Esquith may be the most inspiring school teacher in America. He’s been called “a modern day Thoreau” by Newsday. For the past two decades, Esquith has taught fifth-graders at a public school in a Los Angeles neighborhood plagued by guns, gangs, and violence. Esquith’s students are mostly immigrants or children of immigrants, living in poverty, and learning English. Yet, under his tutelage, they voluntarily come to class at 6:30 a.m., and often stay until five in the afternoon. They play Vivaldi, perform Shakespeare, often score in the top one percent on standardized tests, and go on to attend the best universities. Esquith is the only teacher to be awarded the president’s National Medal of the Arts.

“Freakonomics” - Steven D. Levitt

Details: Steven D. Levitt is a full professor in the Unvierstiy of Chicago’s economics department. Levitt has an enormous curiosity and is set on course by personal experiences and the incongruities he sees in everyday life. He published Freakonomics in 2005, which instantly became a cultural phenomenon. The book spent more than two years on the New York Times besteller list.
