Family Weekend at the College of Business provided an opportunity for students to show off the building to family and friends. Faculty were on hand to greet visitors and there were plenty of bagels and doughnuts to go around. Classrooms were open for viewing and a special study abroad session in the Caterpillar Auditorium profiled the many international opportunities available for business students. The weather provided a beautiful backdrop for an enjoyable weekend to honor parents and family.

Members of our various Advisory Councils, our corporate partners and recruiters consistently tell us that students entering the work force must have soft skills that compliment all they are mastering through coursework. They know Illinois State’s College of Business students are very well-prepared academically, but have asked that we continue helping our graduates develop skills that truly differentiate them from other candidates competing for the same positions.
The array of events that comprise Business Week 2009 are designed specifically to build these competencies and truly capture the spirit of Educating Illinois. They also provide valuable opportunities for alumni and external partners to get connected and hear the perspectives of top business leaders from across the nation. The Business Week 2009 brochure has all the details you’ll need.

We know that in a turbulent financial environment your plans may have to change, so let us know right away if your current plan is to attend, and then let us know if a change becomes necessary later.
Our contacts list is still growing; please share news of this event with any Illinois State Alumni working in the financial world with whom you keep in touch.
The panel discussion will involve several Illinois State finance professionals Alumni speaking to the FMA students and guests on “Dealing With a Difficult Job Market.”
At the April 2008 luncheon, 14 Illinois State Alumni volunteered to form a steering committee to lay ground work for a networking organization for Illinois State alumni from all majors, who work in finance-related professions and want to network with other Illinois State Alumni in the financial world. The 14 have developed the organization through a formal meeting, extensive e-mails, and helping to host the College of Business tent at Illinois State’s 2008 Homecoming (along with a post-game social hour.) These ISAF steering committee members will be at the upcoming lunch to welcome other graduates and discuss our vision for a vibrant networking organization. We will work with the new College of Business Alumni Network, but also have our own activities with the interests of finance professionals in mind. We hope to have both Chicagoland and downstate activities as ISAF grows. Recent turmoil in the financial markets highlights the importance of networking for people in finance-related professions.

Despite bleak news from Wall Street, some students in Illinois State University’s College of Business are experiencing success in managing a portfolio of financial assets valued at about $275,000 (as of Nov. 1, 2008). Like so many, the student-managed portfolio has taken a financial hit in the past few months, but has fared better than many thanks to the students’ careful market research.
The investment portfolio is the on-going project in the Finance, Insurance and Law Department’s Educational Investment Fund class. Students in the class, taught by Professor Thomas Howe, manage the investment fund, now in its 26th year. The fund was set up through the Illinois State University Foundation as an opportunity for finance majors to gain hands-on experience in market research and investment management.
“The Educational Investment Fund is a wonderful way for students to put theory and research into practice when it comes to managing an investment portfolio,” said Gary Koppenhaver, chair of the Department of Finance, Insurance and Law. “Since Nov. 1, 2007, the portfolio has fallen 34.7% compared to the 37.5% decline in the Standard and Poor’s 500 stock index over the same time. The performance difference is due to the hard work of the students in stock selection and the strong mentoring provided by the alumni advisory board of investment professionals.”
Finance majors must apply and be accepted into the Educational Investment Fund class. Each semester about a dozen highly-motivated students become the stewards of the investment portfolio. The semester is spent doing market research on a number of companies in preparation for making stock buying and selling recommendations.
Throughout the semester an alumni advisory board, consisting of 15 investment professionals, mentors the class on the workings of financial markets and professional standards. The advisory board members do not make specific investment recommendations, leaving the final judgment up to the students. At the end of each semester, students make their investment decisions and pass the fund into the hands of the next class.
