Into the Woods

Into the Woods is a delightfully dark and funny musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine.

Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim’s 1976 book, The Uses of Enchantment, the musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them further to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Ridinghood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a Baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm. It also includes references to several other well-known tales.

Ticket Policies

The ticket office in the Center for the Performing Arts handles tickets for all College of Fine Arts events, including music and theatre performances in the Center, plus performances in Westhoff Theatre.

The Ticket Office is open 11 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Call (309) 438-2535. Purchase tickets online at Ticketmaster! 24 hours a day!

There is a performance ticket office (often referred to as “will-call”) open one hour before each performance for picking up tickets. For Center for the Performing Arts performances it is the main ticket office. For Westhoff Theatre performances, it is in the Westhoff lobby.

Late Seating:
Patrons who arrive after a performance has been started for a Westhoff Theatre production will not be seated until intermission if there is one (this is for safety requirements due to the intimate nature of the space — entering the theatre requires walking on the stage). For events in the Center for the Performing Arts, patrons may be seated late at the discretion of the House Manager during an appropriate break in the performance.

Exchanges/Refunds:
Exchanges can be made for a $2.00 exchange fee per ticket at least 24 hours in advance. (First exchange fee is waived for subscribers.) Tickets can not be refunded.

About Illinois State Dance Theatre

Illinois State Dance Theatre (ISDT) is the student-based resident dance company of Illinois State University. Dancers are selected through an open audition process during the fall semester of each school year. The audition is open to the whole student body, and dancers are chosen for their technical and artistic experience and ability as well as for their potential to become valued members of the company. The mission of ISDT is to present the many forms of artistic dance at a professional level to the ISU campus and beyond while giving undergraduate dancers a pre-professional experience that will prepare them for their future in the field.Illinois State Dance Theatre offers students a variety of performance opportunities, on and off campus, working with faculty, guest artists and student choreographers. ISDT enjoys the visibility and strong professional support of the School of Theatre and the College of Fine Arts in the production of our Fall and Spring MainStage Dance Concerts in the Center for the Performing Arts. A Student-Choreographed Dance Concert is presented each Spring to showcase the exceptional creative work composed by members of Illinois State Dance Theatre.

Student performers regularly are involved in touring productions of works by ISU faculty and guest artists, dancing at events throughout the country, including the American College Dance Festival, Dance Chicago, summer intensive programs and informal venues. The Dance program frequently brings working dance professionals to campus to set choreography for select members of ISDT, expanding the students’ repertoire and giving them valuable experiences to complement their Dance education. In the process, students also build priceless professional connections to the Dance world.

Student- and faculty-choreographed dance pieces are adjudicated at the American College Dance Festival in the Spring semester each year, and they repeatedly win high marks.

Cinema Studies minors frequently participate in the Video Art screenings held at the end of each semester. These short experimental, narrative and documentary films are produced by the students enrolled in Art 252 and 253 (Video Art I & II).

About Schoolhouse Film Festival

The Schoolhouse Film Festival celebrates teachers and the power of teaching. The festival was launched in 2007 under the leadership of ISU’s Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology. Its planning committee includes faculty members from history, music, arts technology, cinema studies and other disciplines.

The festival is held in autumn at the Normal Theatre. The first festival included both classic films (“Goodbye, Mr. Chips,” “Blackboard Jungle”) and more recent works (“Stand and Deliver,” “Chalk”). Look for the second installment of the Schoolhouse Film Festival in November 2008.

A Festival of Original,

Student-Written 10-Minute & One-Act Plays

Playwriting is a mysterious art. As playwrights, we awaken in the wee hours of the morning to work on a draft that more than likely will end up in the trash bin. Then after days, weeks, months (sometimes even years), we may finally have a working draft that we can take into a rehearsal hall—all in an attempt to better polish our words. However, this is not the end result. The final task will come only after we witness the impact our play has upon an audience. Only then can we truly consider the dynamics of rewrites.

The Annual Playwrights’ Workshop at Illinois State University showcases Ten-Minute and One-Act plays by student playwrights. The Workshop, in its fourth season, is held during the Fall semester of each academic year. It grew out of the Playwriting course (Theatre/English 348) taught in the Theatre Studies area of the School of Theatre.

The philosophy underlying the Playwrights’ Workshop is that all plays written in the Playwriting class, regardless of their content, should be produced before a live audience. To help realize this goal, directors are recruited from the Theatre faculty, staff and graduate students as well as from the community.

In recent years, these original, student-written plays have shown great diversity in both tone and subject matter. Some plays are funny, some are creepy, and some are simply riveting. All are thought-provoking. Topics covered include romance, marriage, violence, the impact of popular culture, war, communication, betrayal, revenge and broken dreams.

About American College Dance Festival

Illinois State University’s Dance Performance and Dance Education students regularly participate in the American College Dance Festival Association. As an active member of the Central Region of ACDFA, ISU’s Dance program brings student performers and choreographers, as well as Dance faculty and technical staff, to one of the many regional festivals hosted each spring by member institutions. In March 1999 Illinois State University itself hosted one of the largest, most successful festivals in the Midwest Region.

Attendance at an ACDFA festival provides students and faculty members with the opportunity to immerse themselves in Dance as members of a larger artistic community. At the festival students:

View dance performances and concerts each evening.
Enjoy workshops, panels and master classes taught each day by instructors from around the country.
Present a minimum of three choreographic works in informal settings and adjudicated concerts.

An ACDFA festival provides a priceless educational experience that connects seasoned professionals and emerging artists to the field of Dance.

A final “Gala Concert,” performed at the end of each four- or five-day festival, showcases dance pieces selected for their exemplary artistic quality, both in performance and in choreography. Illinois State’s Dance program has been honored consistently throughout the years by being included in the Gala Concert.
