Residency dates: October 19 - November 13Lecture: October 27 at noon. University Galleries, Center for the Visual ArtsVictoria Haven’s recent work includes drawings on paper and material explorations ranging from delicate (ink and collage on Gampi paper) to robust (cut metal structures plated or powder coated). These multiple avenues of investigation are united by Haven’s focused exploitation of the chosen material, which allows her to “emancipate line from form, gesture from surface, and to play with the interval between two and three dimensions. 1Using abstraction, shifting perspectives, and intuitive process, Haven explores phenomenon of fleeting sensations, multiple viewpoints, and severed space. Whether referencing real or the imagined (or collapsing the distinction between them), Haven’s work operates in the realm of psychological as well as formal space.Originally from Seattle, Washington, Haven moved to London in 1997 where she received a MFA from Goldsmith’s college- University of London. Haven’s work has been written about in several publications including Artforum and Art in America. She currently lives and works in Seattle and is represented there by Greg Kucera Gallery and PDX Contemporary Art, Portland. 1 Seattle P-I June 28th, 2007 Abstraction takes on fresh dimensions in Haven’s ‘Iampayingattention’ by Nate Lippens

Into the Woods is a delightfully dark and funny musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine.

Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim’s 1976 book, The Uses of Enchantment, the musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them further to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Ridinghood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a Baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm. It also includes references to several other well-known tales.

“…my professional practice intertwines the conceptual, aesthetic, and functional nature of the objects that surround us highlighting their ability to become participants in the domestic theater.”
-Analia Segal

Analía Segal is an Argentine artist who has lived and worked in New York since 1999. She received her bachelor’s degree in graphic design from the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism at the University of Buenos Aires, and holds a master’s degree in art from New York University. Her works have been exhibited at museums and galleries internationally including Animal Gallery in Santiago, Chile, Kobo Chika Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, DPM Gallery, Miami, Florida, Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina, Bronx Museum, Bronx, NY and White Columns and PS1, both in New York City. The personal language that her work embodies is characterized by a seductive tactile appearance that has earned awards including grants from the Antorchas Foundation, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In addition, several of her works are in many private and public art collections including the recent acquisition of her “aleph” carpet by the design collection of the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art.

Residency dates: August 24 - September 18

Lecture: September 1 at noon. University Galleries, Center for the Visual Arts

Corey J. Escoto’s work focuses on the well-intentioned desire of the developed world to shape and accelerate slow progress of the developing world in the likeness of its own image. With the proliferation of National Government Organizations (NGOs) the earnest desire to “help” is often ineffective and many times has exacerbated the problems that they set out to solve. The trend to “help,” whether defined in a G.W. Bush Neo-Imperialist way, or a micro loan crunchy Peace Corp way, is a sentiment guiding the development of a new sub genre of “World Saving” themed books, films, magazines, blogs and social networking sites. Escoto’s work examines the phenomena of what he terms “global self help” that has emerged with the intense marketing campaigns by purveyors of such materials.

Escoto received a BFA from Texas Tech University, and an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. He has exhibited nationally, internationally, and widely throughout Texas, his home state. He was one of three artists selected to participate in the Great Rivers Biennial at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and is a recipient of a Gateway Foundation Grant. His work has been included in the traveling exhibition New American Talent 23, the Texas Biennial (2007), and has recently shown internationally in exhibitions entitled Le Souvenir, Weimar, Germany; Seven Days Brunch, Basel, Switzerland; and Decollecting, Dunkerque, France.
