Teacher graduates rank in top 20 to receive certification

This post has one comment.

Illinois State ranked among the top 20 institutions in the nation last year for education graduates who received a special certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential that complements, but does not replace, a state’s teacher license. It is considered “the gold standard” for teaching excellence. Illinois State ranked 12th in the nation in 2011, with 58 teachers earning the acclaimed NBPTS certification.

“We believe we have the best educator preparation programs in the nation,” College of Education Dean Deborah Curtis said. “National Board Certification is one among the innumerable ways our alumni commit to lifelong learning. We are tremendously proud of the accomplishments of our alumni.”

I was the first to receive NBPTS certification in Illinois along with 2 others in 1995 when it was given for the first time. I will always remember the hard work that went into receiving this certificate. No one knew what was to be expected or how to prepare for the 2 days of written examination. Yes, I had to write in those black and white exam books in a room with a monitor that watched my every move!! No books, notes, nothing. I didn’t know anyone else from Illinois was even trying and we met at the White House at a reception given for us by then President Bill Clinton. What memories!!!! Congratulations! Illinois State.
