Metcalf first grader, Pierce McDade, placed 15th out of 289 K-1 students at the 2012 National Elementary Chess Championships. The three day, seven round tournament drew 2,234 competitors from 39 states to the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. Pierce ended with a 5-1-1 record. He defeated two players that placed in the top 25, including a student from the exclusive Dalton School in New York City and the Washington state champion. His only loss was in the seventh and final round to the national champion.
Congratulations to the Thomas Metcalf Wildcats for becoming the 2012 IESA Class A Scholastic Bowl State Champions! The team was coached by Fred Basolo and Jennifer Kane. We are so very proud of the team and coaches!



Metcalf Running Club--Lake Run 2012
Ten members of Metcalf Running Club (MRC) joined the fun at the annual Lake Run in Hudson. Finishing first in the male 19-under division was Grayson Will who covered the 4.37 mile course in 30:46. Michael Elzanati finished third in this division! Coach Lauren won her division with a 32:36. Alex Seehuus led the MRC girls with an outstanding top 5 finish in a time of 41:27. All MRC runners finished in the top 13 of their 19-under division. Way to go MRC!

The middle school dance is cancelled for tonight. An announcement was made at the end of the school day, so students should already know, but for those who were absent because of school activities, please take note of this. Parents, do NOT drop your child off tonight at the school! There will be no adult chaperones present!

Come celebrate his career on Friday, May 18, 2012 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Prairie Room of the Bone Student Center on the campus of Illinois State University. There will be a short program at 4 p.m.

Congratulations to the Scholastic Bowl team and coaches Fred Basolo and Jennifer Kane for their win at Sectionals on Monday. The team will compete in the State Tourney this Friday, May 4th in Peoria. Way to go Wildcats!
All Metcalf 7th and 8th grade students are invited to attend the middle school dance on Friday, May 4th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The dance will be held in the small gym. There will be snacks, drinks, and a cool DJ. Dance tickets are $4.00 before the dance and $5.00 at the door. If you would like to buy tickets ahead of time, contact Kevin C., Sydney, Natalie, or Caroline.
The Metcalf Garden Annual Plant and Bloodflower Sale will be held on May 10th and 11th from 7:30 to 7:45 a.m. in the back of the school on the blacktop. Please plan to stop by the sale after you drop off your students for school. A selection of annuals, herbs, and seeds will be available. We will also offer plants potted by second graders, bloodflowers that nurture monarch caterpillars, and a variety of other garden items. You will also find some lovely surprises when you stop by the sale. New this year are some small plants potted in special containers. We are also accepting donations of plants for the sale. They can be purchased or shared from your garden. You can place your donations (labeled with plant names) on the picnic tables next to the Hayden Auditorium entrance.
