Our District Foreign Language Committee met a few years back and one of the issues they discussed was alignment with U-High classes.  If we were to offer German to our students, they would not be able to continue in their sequence and get the credits they need for high school.  However, once they get to U-High, there may be a possibility that they could take German at ISU or an online course.

This gate is used by ISU students and staff members and although it is continually being closed, it’s also continually being left open.  We feel very fortunate to be one of the only schools in town that have a gated playground which gives us more security than most schools in town.  We have alerted our supervisors about the issue with the gate and have asked them to move congregating kids away from that area.  While we agree that college students and staff members can walk through the opening where the cars exit, we also want to make sure, for their safety, that they use the gate area during those high traffic times in the morning and after school.

Four years ago Dr. Dean set up a district committee to make recommendations regarding foreign language.  Those recommendations were sent out to all parents and staff members following his approval.  One of the recommendations was that classes will be offered in accordance with student/parent choice.  Last year we had less than 7 students entering the 6th grade sign up for French.  Because we follow the district recommendations, we didn’t have enough students to fill a French class.  We created two Spanish classes for this particular 6th grade based on their choice.  Next year the 6th grade class will have the same opportunity to sign up for either French or Spanish and based on the numbers we will determine what classes to offer.
